A new seasonal menu at Pleasant Pops

By Emily Platt

It’s no secret. We had a pretty kale heavy winter at Pleasant Pops. Having two out of three salads served over a bed of chopped kale was delicious, and certainly seasonal, but haven’t we all eaten our fill? Yes. Yes we have. And with that declaration I’m so excited to announce our brand new spring/summer menu for 2014, which hit the board today and will be available for the next month and a half. Don’t worry, we haven’t replaced the Dijon Sprout Salad, but have two awesome new, and very colorful, salads to accompany it. As well, a brand new sandwich (with an amazing new creamy feta spread) and a chilled, totally dairy and gluten free, soup.

For two months now you’ve all be asking “where are the soups?!” Well, they’re back. Knowing our DC audience well, we’ve elected to only do chilled soups during the summer months, but boy oh boy, are they ever yummy. Our first summer soup is a Cucumber & Avocado one, garnished with fresh tomatoes and a dash of cilantro. It’s so green and so luscious, it’s hard to believe it’s dairy free. Though we serve it in the shop with a healthy side of baguette, the soup itself is totally gluten free. Both refreshing and healthy, a cup of Cucumber & Avocado soup is a perfect snack on a summer day.

Our newest sandwich, the Mushroom & Feta, is a vegetarian's dream. Served on fresh baguettes from Lyon bakery, this sandwich is creamy, flavorful and chalked full of veggies. After spreading a healthy layer of homemade feta spread, we add some marinated and roasted button mushrooms, caramelized onions, bell peppers and fresh greens. I won’t lie, I’ve never been a mushroom person, but this sandwich may make a convert of me yet.

Finally, the salads. With some minor adjustments to a favorite from last summer, our Strawberry & Goat Cheese salad is as scrumptious as it is colorful. Atop a bed of mixed greens, we have fresh local strawberries, pasteurized goat cheese, slivered almonds and sunflower seeds (for that ever desired crunch factor). With a homemade poppyseed dressing, this salad is both refreshing and totally satisfying. Our Farmhouse Salad is everything I’ve ever dreamed of, and more. Using fresh asparagus, off-the-cob-corn kernels, cherry tomatoes, and cubes of fresh cheddar cheese, we top this salad with a simple balsamic vinaigrette (and bottom it with mixed greens). I am such a fan of this salad that by the time you stop in to get one the asparagus might be all gone. That’s not a threat, just a warning. Stop by soon!
